Mayo Action on Heart Disease & Stroke

Mayo Action on Heart Disease & Stroke’ is a community-based cardiovascular disease prevention programme. Developed as a partnership between Croí and the HSE in Mayo in 2009, this unique collaboration has been to the forefront in developing and implementing a suite of evidence-based preventive health initiatives and public awareness campaigns in Mayo, which have helped to reduce the impact of heart disease and stroke on many families. Some examples include:

Developed in partnership with the Cardiac Rehabilitation department at Mayo University Hospital in 2015, this group continues to grow and boasts over 500 active members at present. Our support meetings rotate across the county and continue to offer a mix of educational and social support for individuals who are living with heart disease. These meetings provide a valuable opportunity for individuals to learn more about their condition, and to share their experiences and provide support to their peers who are also recovering from various heart-related conditions. Educational sessions include information and advice on diet, physical activity, risk factor management and heart medications.

Croí has been instrumental in supporting the training of 5 local Exercise Instructors who are now delivering tailored exercise classes to individuals living with heart disease. These classes are available in Balla, Breaffy, Westport, Castlebar and Charlestown.

Education is an integral part of the ‘Mayo Action on Heart Disease & Stroke’ programme. An education series has been developed for health care professionals, which offers opportunities for learning in relation to prevention and management of cardiovascular disease so that heart health, diabetes and stroke care services in Mayo can be improved and can achieve better outcomes for patients.
This campaign continues to successfully raise public awareness of the signs and symptoms of heart attack. Having won an award at the Irish Health Care Awards, for its work with the farming community in Mayo; this awareness project has since delivered its key life-saving messages into Barber Shops in County Mayo.

Croí has been working in partnership with the HSE in Mayo since 2012 to deliver a series of monthly meetings for individuals living with stroke and their family member/carers. The meeting schedule is designed to meet the needs of the service-users and is continually informed by participant feedback and evaluations. Each meeting includes a facilitated session on a topic of interest. Examples include dealing with fatigue post stroke, communication challenges and emotional recovery post stroke. There is also dedicated time so that participants have an opportunity to mix and chat.

Croí is committed to achieving better outcomes for patients and so we are continuing to deliver an educational series for health care professionals in County Mayo in association with the ‘Mayo Action on Heart Disease & Stroke’ programme. Master classes have included education on diabetes management, ECG training, CPR training, and lifestyle and clinical risk factor management.

The ‘Mayo Action on Heart Disease & Stroke’ programme continues to promote heart health at a community level and raise public awareness of the risk factors for heart disease and stroke. The Nurse Lead works closely with various community organisations e.g. Family Resource Centres, Rural Social Schemes, Active Retirement Groups, Traveller Support Groups, Men’s Sheds, to ensure specific population groups are reached. This is a critical part of the work so that individuals are supported to engage in heart healthy behaviours in order to reduce their risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and related cardiovascular conditions.
