Mayo Third Age Programme

Croí, the Heart & Stroke Charity, is delighted to launch a new initiative, The Croí Third Age Programme: Changing Lives Through Healthy Ageing.

In Ireland and across the world people are living longer. In fact, by 2050, 1 in 5 people worldwide will be over 60 years of age. Healthy older people contribute significantly and in very positive ways to our families, communities and economies.

The Croí Third Age Programme offers a new way of thinking – it’s proactive and puts the spotlight on the 55+ age group, promoting the benefits of risk factor awareness and screening for early signs of often debilitating cardiovascular health conditions such as hypertension, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, heart valve disease, etc. By screening for conditions such as these, early detection is possible and early intervention can make the difference between effective treatment or long term chronic illness with its associated impact on quality of life.

Understandably, ageing naturally causes changes in the heart and blood vessels and these age-related changes often increase a persons risk of cardiovascular disease. People aged 55 and older are much more likely than younger people to have a stroke or to develop heart problems. The concept of the Third Age focuses attention on this age category, when age-related cardiovascular health conditions become more prevalent. Many of these conditions can be detected through early and appropriate screening and their impact can be significantly reduced with treatment.

“We want to show that by targeting the 55+ age group, we can make a real difference to a person’s health, longevity and quality of life with obvious benefits to themselves, their families and their community,” says Croí Cardiovascular Nurse Specialist and Programme Lead, Patricia Hall.

The Croí Third Age Programme has begun work in Mayo, delivering free cardiac and stroke risk screenings and assessments, targeting those over the age of 55, and delivered by a qualified team of Croí healthcare professionals.
