The Mary Condon Memorial Bursary was established by Mary’s daughter, Gráinne, as an annual donation to Croí in memory of her mother Mary Condon (née Walsh). The bursary has been established to support nurse education in the area of cardiovascular disease prevention and cardiovascular health.
Mary Bridget Walsh was born in February 1931 in Bridge Street, Headford, Co. Galway. After completing her Leaving Certificate, Mary qualified as a nurse on the wards of Galway Regional Hospital (now Galway University Hospital). She took a break from her nursing career to care for her father Jim and remained as his carer until his passing in July 1954. Mary resumed her nursing career at Galway Regional Hospital, where she worked as a Ward Sister until her marriage to John Condon in 1959. Following her marriage she moved to Cork City, where she lived for the remainder of her life with John (1930 – 2015) and her daughters, Úna (1961 – 2019) and Gráinne. Mary passed away in February 2007.
While Mary spent the majority of her lifetime in Cork, she had a special affinity with her native town, Headford, always describing it as ‘going home to Headford’.
“Going home, going home
I’ll be going home
See the light See the sun
I’m just going home”
(Dvorak, 1893 / Fisher, 1922)
Annually, the Mary Condon Memorial Bursary is awarded by Croí to support a Nurse or Nurses wishing to pursue further education or professional skills development.
