The film highlights the work of both Dr Niamh Hynes and the team at CÚRAM Research Ireland Centre for Medical Devices and paramedic Pat McCarthy and it showcases the resilience of musician Frankie Lane and partner Anita Lane. \n🗓 Date: Monday Sept. 29th 2025 \n📍Venue: Croí House\, Moyola Lane\, Newcastle\, Galway H91FF68 \n⏰Time: 6pm Reception | 6.45pm Film screening (25 min) & Q & A \nFREE EVENT RSVP using the button below.  \n \n Bookings have now closed for this event\n \nTo mark #WorldHeartDay on Monday September 29th\, CÚRAM Research Ireland Centre for Medical Devices based at University of Galway and Croí\, the Heart and Stroke Charity will host a free screening of the latest Science on Screen film\, ‘Counter Attack’ at Croí house\, in Newcastle\, Galway. Directed by Tiernan Williams and produced by Maria O’Neill of Cluster Fox Film\, the film explores cardiovascular disease from the patient\, researcher\, paramedic and family perspective. The film was produced under the Science on Screen Education and Public Engagement Programme\, a partnership between CÚRAM and Ardán running since 2015.  \nThe film features Kildare-based musician Frankie Lane\, who suffered a heart attack followed by a cardiac arrest\, Frankie’s wife Anita Lane and Cork based paramedic Pat McCarthy. The documentary also features CÚRAM’s University of Galway-based researchers\, including vascular surgeon Dr. Niamh Hynes who focusses on the body’s largest artery – the aorta. Her research looks at predicting if\, and when an aortic rupture will happen and\, using AI and machine learning\, how we can build computer models or ‘digital twins’ of aortas to understand the rupture process.  \nThe screening will be followed by a panel discussion with some of the film’s contributors and an audience Q&A.  \nThis World Heart Day – don’t miss a beat: real stories\, real science\, real lives.  \nAnnie Costelloe\, Head of Patient and Community Engagement at Croí\, said: “World Heart Day is about raising awareness of heart health and inspiring action\, and this year’s theme\, ‘Don’t miss a beat\,’ could not be more fitting. Screening ‘Counter Attack’ here at the Croí Heart and Stroke Centre allows us to bring a powerful real-life story to the community\, highlighting both the urgency and the hope in tackling heart disease. It is a timely reminder that every beat matters\, and that knowledge\, support and early action can save lives.”  \nDoors open at 6pm\, with film screening at 6.45pm and link to register for the event is here: https://croi.clr.events/event/138837:counter-attack-  \nWatch the ‘Counter Attack’ trailer\nCÚRAM’s public engagement programme aims to provide opportunities for collaboration with patient or public audiences interested in or affected by its research and a key aspect of the Science on Screen Programme – that is co-managed with Ardán (previously Galway Film Centre) – is the collaboration between filmmakers\, researchers and those with lived conditions of chronic illness.  \nArdán is a non-profit talent development organisation that supports creatives in the audio-visual industry\, in film\, TV\, games\, and animation\, through funding\, training\, and events\, and by providing opportunities for entry\, emerging\, and established individuals working in the screen sector.   \nCroí is a registered Irish Heart and Stroke Charity. Croí’s mission is to prevent heart disease and stroke\, save lives\, and empower and support people\, families\, communities\, and future generations to take control of their health and well-being. The Croí Heart & Stroke Centre\, is a leading centre for heart and stroke prevention\, research\, education\, support\, and rehabilitation located in Newcastle\, Galway.  \nThe Science on Screen scheme was founded to explore the stories behind science and to facilitate\, promote and increase the inclusion of science\, technology\, engineering and maths (STEM) content in Irish film and TV production. Over the last ten years the films and animations produced through Science on Screen have been screened in 30 different countries and reached almost 2 million people through broadcasts\, film festivals\, through community\, academic and clinical screenings and via online platforms and public exhibits.  \n2025 marks the 10th year of CÚRAM & Ardán’s Science on Screen programme\, and we look forward to celebrating the anniversary of this initiative in Galway later this year.  \nFind out more about Ardán at www.ardan.ie  \nFind out more about CÚRAM at www.curamdevices.ie

SUMMARY:Croí Heart Day with Benecol - Killybegs
DESCRIPTION:Croí Partners with Benecol for national cholesterol awareness campaign\nBenecol Ireland is thrilled to  collaborate with Croí Heart and Stroke Charity\, bringing together the spirit of community and shared knowledge. Join us a “Croí Heart Day” event on Tuesday\, 8th October\, from 10.30am-2.30pm at Bayview Hotel\, Killybegs\, Co. Donegal.  \nKillybegs GAA won the campaign that ran over the summer months calling for all communities to apply for their very own Heart Day. \nThe importance of understanding cholesterol \nHigh cholesterol increases the risk of heart disease\, stroke\, and peripheral artery disease. It’s estimated that 1 in 2 adults in Ireland have elevated cholesterol levels.1 Cholesterol isn’t just a number; it’s a vital piece of our health puzzle. \nThe event aims to bring the community together to tackle common concerns about cholesterol. There will be expert talks\, free cholesterol tests (for those that haven’t been tested in the last year) and plenty more in this half day event. \nLaura O’Connell\, Senior Marketing Manager for Benecol Ireland\, said: “We are dedicated to prioritising heart-health for our consumers by lowering cholesterol. SUMMARY:Mobile Health Hub Launch - O'Tooles Supervalu\, Tuam
DESCRIPTION:Croí\, the heart and stroke charity\, is proud to announce the official launch of the Croí Mobile Health Hub\, a state-of-the-art mobile health unit\, at O’Tooles SuperValu\, Tuam\, on Thursday\, September 12th\, from 10 am to 4 pm. Attendees can take advantage of free blood pressure and stethoscope checks\, along with expert health advice. The event will also feature a talk by the Croí Health Team on the benefits of healthy eating and physical activity for maintaining a healthy heart. This is a great opportunity to learn more about heart health and connect with the experts. \nCommissioned as part of a transformative legacy donation of over €3 million from the Joe & Helen O’Toole Charitable Trust\, the Croí Mobile Health Hub is a first of its kind in Ireland. The 13.6-metre-long multi-purpose unit is the largest of its type in the country\, designed to facilitate early detection of stroke and heart disease. Equipped with six private assessment cubicles and two consultation rooms\, the vehicle can also be converted into an open-plan educational and training space capable of hosting up to 40 visitors\, with full audio-visual facilities. \nMark O’Donnell\, Croí Chief Executive\, emphasised the importance of this groundbreaking initiative:  “Stroke and heart disease remain the leading causes of death and acquired disability worldwide\, yet 80% of early cardiovascular disease is preventable. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of the Joe & Helen O’Toole Charitable Trust\, this purpose-built mobile facility will bring lifesaving services directly to communities. The Croí multi-disciplinary health team will provide varied early detection and preventive health checks on board\, as well as deliver education and training events. We are committed to making these services accessible across the region and beyond through our mobile units\, as well as building out the delivery of additional and more advanced diagnostics and research activities over time.” \nThe Croí Mobile Health Hub will serve as a vital resource offering a wide range of free health activities across the West of Ireland and beyond. Its capacity to deliver such public-facing health initiatives will help to empower individuals with the knowledge and support they need to take control of their heart health. \nEducation programmes will cover a broad spectrum of topics\, including brain and heart health; specialist lifestyle and dietary advice; recognition of stroke and heart attack signs and symptoms; defibrillation training for community first responders and home responders; post-stroke and post-heart attack recovery within the community; disease awareness and advocacy campaigns as well as exercise based physical activity. \nThe Croí Mobile Health Hub is the third community vehicle acquired by Croí since launching a Community Mobile Health Unit and minibus earlier this year\, all of which have been funded by the trust. In addition\, the Joe & Helen O’Toole Stroke Hub will open at the Croí Heart & Stroke Centre in Newcastle in January 2025 to provide post-hospital discharge stroke care and support services as part of this legacy donation. \nMary Lardner\, a trustee of the Joe & Helen O’Toole Charitable Trust\, expressed pride in seeing this project come to fruition: “Joe and Helen were deeply committed to improving the lives of those in their community and the Croí Mobile Health Hub is a fitting tribute to their legacy. We hope that through this initiative\, more lives will be saved and families will be spared the devastating impact of stroke and heart disease.”  \nThe launch event on September 12th is open to all and Croí encourages everyone in Tuam and the surrounding areas to visit the truck to take advantage of the free health checks and educational sessions from 10 am – 4 pm outside O’Tooles SuperValu to learn more about how to protect themselves and their loved ones from stroke and heart disease. \nFor more information\, please email community@croi.ie or call 091-544310.
