Representatives from HSVI and Croí attended a special cardiovascular health event that took place at the European Parliament in Strasbourg from 11-14 December to support the European Alliance for Cardiovascular Health (EACH) ‘Vote Cardiovascular Health 2024’ campaign calling for a comprehensive EU policy response to improve the cardiovascular health of EU citizens.
We were delighted to be part of the delegation representing the voice of heart and stroke patients, their carers, and citizens from across Ireland, and we were delighted to meet Irish MEPs to ensure their support of an EU cardiovascular health plan next term.
HSVI representatives at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
Thank you to the following MEPs for meeting with us and pledging your support to the campaign:
Cardiovascular Disease is the leading cause of death in Europe and is responsible for approximately 36,000 deaths annually at a cost of €282 billion! On average, that’s €636 per person across Europe. It is insidious, invisible, and very often devastating. In Ireland, it claims approximately 10,000 lives each year, with around 7,000 Irish people suffering life-changing strokes annually. CVD is also the leading cause of disability in Ireland, marked by significant inequalities based on generation, gender, and geography.
It’s not all bad news. Support and momentum are building around a dedicated European Cardiovascular Health Plan. This is the moment to build on the foundations that have already started and write the next chapter on a new era for cardiovascular health for all across 27 member states.
As EU and Irish citizens we are calling for brave and visionary leadership and commitment from our policy makers across all parties and none. We will all be patients someday and will want to be sure our voices are represented and included. We will be meeting our Irish MEPs and seeking their support to move this forward. #VoteHealth2024
