Croí, the heart and stroke charity, continues to make a meaningful impact in Sligo, thanks to the incredible support of the local community. In collaboration with Sligo University Hospital, Croí recently funded the refurbishment of the Family Room in the Coronary Care Unit—a private, welcoming, space for families facing difficult times while their loved one receives care.
Speaking about the initiative, Mike Cubbard, Croí’s Community & Events Fundraising Coordinator, said: “A hospital stay can be a challenging experience, particularly for families supporting a loved one in critical care. The Family Room provides a quiet, comfortable, space where they can take a moment, gather their thoughts, and find the support they need. Thanks to the generosity of the people of Sligo, we were able to help make this happen.”
This vital work would not be possible without the dedication of individuals and groups across Sligo who have stepped up to fundraise for Croí. In 2024, several local events raised much-needed funds, including the Ballisodare Cycling Club fundraiser, Damien Killoran’s memorial night, Paul Flynn’s cycle abroad and birthday collection and Geevagh GAA’s 50/50 draw. Croí is calling on more people in Sligo to get involved, whether through sporting events, coffee mornings or local fundraisers, every contribution makes a real impact.
As part of its commitment to prevention, and thanks to The Hospital Saturday Fund, The Croí Mobile Health Unit is coming to Sligo to offer a free Heart Health Check event at St Brigid’s Hall, Tubbercurry, on March 27th from 10.30 – 2 pm. This is a great opportunity for the community to receive blood pressure and pulse checks, avail of expert advice, and take proactive steps toward a healthier future.
Croí’s telephone helpline, Croí Connects, is available for those living with or affected by heart disease and stroke. When you call, you will be connected with a Cardiac Nurse Specialist and you can also join weekly online health chats. Croí Connects is available weekdays from 9 am – 5:30 pm by calling 091 544310 or by email at healthteam@croi.ie
